“This is a historic day for India. A historic day, which will be marked in navigation history and globally,” joyously expressed defense minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

For the first time ever, an all-women Indian crew is set to attempt circumnavigating the globe. The crew is led by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi and includes Lieutenant Commander Pratibha Jamwal, Lieutenant Commander Swathi P., Lieutenant Aishwarya Boddapati, Lieutenant Sh Vijaya Devi and Lieutenant Payal Gupta. These women are part of Indian Navy’s prized vessel – INSV Mhadei.

The crew is going to cover 21,600 nautical miles around the world in eight months and will return to Verem, Goa early March next year.

During their journey, the crew will make four stops in different countries – Fremantle in Australia, Lyttleton in New Zealand, Port Stanley in the Falklands, and Cape Town in South Africa. The officers will sail through three oceans – Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic.

Today, they have arrived at Fremantle, Australia after sailing for 43 days, completing their first leg of the Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition.

Sitharaman feels this is a great step to encourage more women to join Indian Navy. She said, “To boost morale in the country and for more women to take part in adventures like sailing, I feel it is great that an all-woman team has been formed.”
