As Per This Research, Teens Grinding Their Teeth In Sleep Are Probably Being Bullied

According to a study by Oral Health Charity published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, teens that grind teeth in sleep are more likely to be bullied than those who don’t.

This sign can potentially help parents to identify the symptoms, sooner.

The researchers of the study found that teenagers who face verbal bullying at school are almost four times more likely to suffer from sleep bruxism (65%) than to the ones who aren’t the victim of bullying (17%).

Sleep bruxism, where a person grinds their teeth in sleep, can lead to major oral health problems over the time. These include migraines, sensitive and worn teeth, chipped or cracked lips, loss of teeth, severe oral pain and even irreparable damage.

Nigel Carter, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, says, “Bullying of any form is absolutely abhorrent and can have both a physical and psychological impact, and when experienced in childhood, can lead to trauma that might last throughout adulthood.”

With the revelations of this study, its researchers also alert the parents, school teachers and guardians to be on always guard when the kid complains about oral health problems.

“Grinding teeth may not sound like priority within the wider picture but it could prove to give a vital insight into a child’s state of mind and could be an important sign for us to identify bullying at an earlier stage,” said Carter.

Explaining the cause of teeth grinding, he further added, “Both children and adults tend to grind their teeth when suffering from stress, and bullying is a significant contributor here.”
