In yet another heart-wrenching incident of rape in India, a 19-year old woman was allegedly gang-raped by an auto driver and his friends in Gurugram on Tuesday.

The survivor hails from Sohna. She was waiting for the bus to Aligarh at Sohna bus stand some time around 8 p.m. on Tuesday when an autorickshaw driver informed her that the bus to Aligarh had already left. He told her that she could, however, find a train and offered her a lift to the Gurugram railway station.

She took the offer and sat in the auto. Thr driver however diverted from the route after a while and turned towards the Raisina crusher zone. He paid no heed to her protests and kept on driving.

According to a report by Hindustan Times she reported to the police, “The accused stopped the vehicle at a secluded spot where there were a lot of bushes and I saw four other persons waiting there. The accused caught hold of me and they took turns to rape me. When I tried to fight them off, they pinned down my hands and legs.”

The woman reported that she fell unconscious after a while. The driver made her drink some water and also threatened to kill her if she told about the rape to anyone. In her complaint, the survivor also named one of the accused.

She again lost consciousness and when she got back to her wits found herself all alone in the spot. She somehow reached her home and informed her family about what had happened and after that lodged a complaint with the police.

The spokesperson of Gurugram Police, Ravinder Kumar, shared with Hindustan Times, “A case has been registered and we are probing the matter. The accused would be arrested soon.”

With no strong actions against the increasing cases of sexual assault and rape in the country, the incidents keep on rising as the fear of getting punished gets on decreasing. While a bunch of intellectuals keeps debating the topic of how safe a country India is for women, the rising incidents of sexual assaults and rape only suggest that we need to make amendments and we need to make them soon.
