Indian model Madhu Sapre won Femina Miss Indian Pageant in 1992. She went on to represent our country at the Miss Universe pageant. Although she lost the competition, she won a very few hearts that day during the question-answer round.
She was asked what she would do if she were the PM of India for a day. To which she replied, she would get a world class sports stadium made for the country’s sportsmen. Sadly, people laughed at her for not talking about the bigger problems than sports.
She replied, “If I became a leader of my country, the first thing I’d do is open up the biggest sports ground in India because we’re lacking there.”
Her reply didn’t really impress the judges. However, it totally made sense. One of the major reasons why India is still lagging behind in sports is because of the lack of amenities. Keeping aside cricket, we can clearly see a poor administration, lack of basic infrastructure, etc. in other sports.
In an interview later, she said, “I said what my heart told me, and I lost. Being a sports girl, I had suffered because we don’t have the equipment and the grounds in India.”
Hats off to you, Madhu. You’re a visionary.
