Women Auto-Rickshaw Drivers In Chennai Face Sexism

Driving an auto-rickshaw is a career field dominated solely by men. Infact, you wouldn’t have been able to find a single woman auto-rickshaw driver in any of the cities in India, up until now. Chennai is leading a revolution by letting women sign up for driving autos in the city, since March 2014.
Women travelers undoubtedly feel safer and more secure with the female drivers. But no story is complete without a handful of villains trying to mess everything up. The women drivers face sexism and tribulations on a daily basis, courtesy of their fellow male colleagues. They feel the women drivers are eating up their market, and so harassing them is naturally justified. Those men are making history by throwing the women’s keys away, puncturing their autos’ tires, physically assaulting the women with occasional threats on the side.
As a result, the women drivers have to be more cautious, vigilant and strong. They even have a self-imposed curfew.
However, this has not deterred the women of Chennai from signing up for the job. More and more women are choosing it as a means of earning their living. These women are fighting back to the unjust behavior and society’s ugly opinion, and so should we. Nothing should keep women back from getting what they want, in one way or another. #YouGoGirl
