Woman To Know: Meghna Sahoo, The Trans Woman Contesting The Rajya Sabha Election

When Meghna Sahoo walked into the Odisha assembly secretariat to buy herself an election form for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election, we applauded her courage.
Meghna, a transgender woman, wants to be a Rajya Sabha member so she can fight vigorously for the rights of the transgender community. For now, she seeks the support of other political leaders to help her win the vacant Rajya Sabha seat which is now in contention from Odisha ever since Bishnu Charan Das resigned from the Upper House this March. The election is slated to be held this May.
She told Mint, “I will seek the support of all parties including the ruling BJD. Today I met some leaders of BJP and Congress. Tomorrow I will try to meet the chief minister.”
Meghna is a 30-year-old MBA graduate with high ambitions. With this step, she has become the first person to purchase the nomination form. The reason behind her brave step is the rejection she faced from our society. She used to work as the Marketing Manager at Lal’s Path Lab, however, after she started dressing herself up as a woman, she lost her job.
We wish her attempt to use Indian political platform to advocate for transgender rights comes true.
