Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency’s MP is the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and their local administration has come up with a strict order for curbing the misuse of social media platforms by many people.

The District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police from Varanasi’s local administration issued a joint order stating that the group admins of Facebook and Whatsapp can be booked for the posts on their groups which are factually incorrect, spread rumour, provide misleading information, trigger tension and even communal rift, or are offensive in any other way.

“There are several groups on social media which are named on newsgroups and also groups with other names which are propagating news and information which is not authentic. These are being forwarded without cross-checking,” the joint order reads.

It also provides some guidelines to the group admins and advises them to only add those people in the social groups who are known to them personally.

“If any statement is made by a group member which is fake or can spark religious unrest, the group administrator must deny it on the group and remove the member from the group,” the order states.

“In the event of inaction from the group admin, he or she will be considered guilty and action will be taken against the group admin,” the order suggests further. “Such a post must also be reported to the nearest police station.”

For some time, now, the Government has taken up many efforts to make social media platforms safer and offense-free, so as to maintain freedom of expression while urging the people to understand their social responsibility, too.

We think that with the power to voice one’s opinion that the social media platforms have given to each one of us is humungous and with this great power in our hands, it becomes our responsibility to use the medium judiciously and constructively. This order must be taken in a positive stride to understand that the best way to be socially aware and responsible is through self-censorship. As a social community, we all must discourage any person who uses the platform to spread negativity in any manner.
