What Happened When Real Women Tried To Pose Like Female Superheroes

Women are capable of creating wonders! I totally second this notion. And so do the makers of female super-hero comics. But apparently, they’ve gone a bit too far on that thought.

Don’t you think? Well, recall the poses of Wonder Woman, or Spider-Woman, for that matter, and you’ll know in a jiffy what I’m talking about!

The way these ladies twist, bend, and swirl their bodies is as fictional as they are. And we’re not saying just! The statement is backed by Buzzfeed’s recent experiment in which they made some real life women imitate the poses of the female superheroes.

Here’s how the attempts went.

“I’ll be fine if I go to the chiropractor later,” one woman said. “It’s so hard,” said another.

No amount of twisting or contorting could make them look even an iota bit like them.

“Her spine is a Z, and her butt is a bubble, and it’s just not something my body will ever look like,” one woman said.

“I did my best,” said another woman. “I’m not going to get mad at my body for not being able to do impossible things.”

Some of the participants of the challenge also went on to say that it is silly for these female superheroes to fight crime and save the world while also being hyper-sexualized. A ‘strength-pose’ would have made much more sense than the ‘sex-pose’.

To further drive the point home, Buzzfeed photoshopped these women’s pictures to replicate precisely the original comic book heroes. Here’s how that went.

“I just find everything so hilariously awful. I know a lot of people will say ‘It’s just a cartoon’ or ‘It’s not real’ but what people don’t realize is how these images can affect women — and men alike. We’re perpetuating an image that is physically impossible to attain. Is there something wrong with having women with rib cages fight crime? Or do they HAVE to have heart-shaped bums to succeed?” said one woman.

Well, this is food for thought, isn’t it?
