It was Women Hockey Team’s turn to receive laurels.
On July 12, Preeti Dubey, a midfielder of the team, had earned a goal making the team qualify for FIH Hockey World League Semi-finals.
Fighting hard with the Chile’s team for good 38 minutes, Dubey finally scored a goal for the team. They had beaten the counterpart for 1-0. With this win, the Indian team has also secured its first win in the tournament.
Earlier, India had a goalless match with South Africa, which was declared drawn. Later, the Indian team lost a match against the USA with 1-4.
The Wednesday match had zealous attacks from both teams. In the first 12 minutes, the match was pretty much in India’s favor, however, the scenario overturned when a referral video was shown, and the team couldn’t score a goal in the first half.
After much agitation, Dubey slotted the goal in the third quarter. Waving at their victory, Coach Sjoerd Marijne told to The Field, “It was a must-win game for us, and we did exactly that. The pressure [to reach the quarterfinals] is off now and we hope to do better against Argentina.”
India will be playing against Argentina on July 16 in the quarterfinals of the tournament. With this, we have our eyes fixed on Preeti Dubey, who hails from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The 19-year-old midfielder joined the team in 2016 during the Summer Olympics. Since then, she has earned five international goals.
Captain Rani Rampal tweeted her excitement:
