This Happened When Artists With Disabilities Were Asked To Draw Their ‘Sexuality’

  • IWB Post
  •  August 11, 2017

Amy Auerbach and Stephanie Rudd work at Creativity Explored, a San Francisco-based nonprofits art gallery and studio designed specifically for adult artists with mental and physical disabilities. The space was founded in 1983 by Florence Ludins-Katz and Elias Katz.

Recently, both the women encouraged the in-house artists to draw their sexualities under the project called ‘Exposed.’ Amy explained, “Everybody has a sexual nature to them. Just because someone has a developmental disability doesn’t mean that sense of sexuality is non-existent.”

Artist Camille Holvoet and co-curator Stephanie Rudd are enjoying their moment at tonight’s opening of Exposed. Come on by. We’re here until 9! #creativityexplored #outsiderart #artopening

The show features the artwork of six artists who, using sketches, paints and sculptures, have brought forward their personal understanding of the term sexuality. These artists are Camille Holvoet, Andrew Bixler, Jose Nunez, Kate Thompson, Antonio Benjamin, and Thomas Pringle.

36-year-old artist Antonio Benjamin drew a naked human body and explained, “When I’m drawing a naked body, it’s not sexual.”

Another 65-year-old artist Camille Holvoet drew a “fat goddess” – a self-portrait. She said, “Drawing naked people reminds me of the dryer vent feelings. It reminds me that I want to play with others. Go in their rooms if they leave the door unlocked and play with them, naked people.”

76-year-old artist Thomas Pringle said, “When I make something, like a painting of a woman, it’s about sex. I use pictures, and I try to make it as a real body. I look for one that’s good-looking. With my disability, for instance, I don’t know how [to have sex], but I got it in my mind. I’m still having sex, but in a different way.”
