This Father Talks About Dealing With ‘Hair Tourniquet’ – A Severe Medical Condition Among Babies

This story is of Scott and Jessica Walker of Wichita, Kansas and their little 19-week-old daughter, Molly.
One fine day, the parents found it tough to calm down their daughter who started screaming at lunch-time. To ease the situation, Jessica removed baby’s socks to cool her down. It was then when she found a hair tourniquet around her toe.
Hair tourniquet is a severe medical condition wherein a hair or other thread becomes tied around a toe or finger tightly. It’s also known as toe tourniquet. The problem usually arises in babies and small children when hairs and thread are lost loosely inside socks.
Scott told TODAY.com, “The hair tourniquet syndrome wasn’t anything I ever heard about. When we found it was pretty stressful because any time your kid is hurt it’s stressful; you feel helpless. I’m lucky enough to have a wife who is an awesome nurse who was able to remove the hair in minutes.”
At first, it was difficult for the couple to cut the strand tightly wrapped around baby’s toe, stopping the blood flow.
In his FB post, Scott wrote, “Unfortunately, the hair managed to cut all the way through Molly’s skin, completely around her toe, but it could have been worse had it gone much longer untreated, or if the hair wasn’t accessible.”
