I have come across stories of young boys being denied rented accommodation considering they often engage in questionable activities and create nuisance!
But getting to hear that a young woman is denied a rented flat in Mumbai for being single and an actress, is nothing but bizarre!
Yes, I am serious!
Actress Nidhhi Aggerwal who lived with her friend in an apartment in Bandra, Mumbai was asked to vacate the same because the housing society objected to her being a ‘single’ girl as well as to her choice of vocation.
Aggerwal told Mid-Day that the housing society wasn’t very comfortable with renting out houses to models and actors as it suspects that they make money through ‘illegal means.’
“Because I am single and an actress, I have been denied accommodation. I have lived with my friend for nearly six months. Now, hunting for a new place seems an impossible task,” the actress told Mid-Day.
Well, this is not the only case from Mumbai that caught the attention of many! Actor Emraan Hashmi was refused a flat in July 2009 because of his religion. Even Shabana Azmi has faced the same.
According to The Times of India, housing societies often create a set of by-laws, under the Co-operative Societies Act, which allows them to deny tenancy to a certain party. However, it’s a constitutional violation. According to the law, every Indian citizen has the right to reside anywhere in the country and discrimination is not allowed on the basis of religion, caste, sex, eating habits or marital status.
