The Girl Who Wears Sarees With Biker Chic Shoes Speaks About Breaking (Fashion) Stereotypes

Very few fashion bloggers in India let their personal style slip in while working with brands. One of them is Devyaani Kapoor of Breviloquent who makes sure her favorites make a sinfully striking appearance every time she poses for a photoshoot.
“Especially my bindis,” says a chuckling Devyaani.
“And one day she discovered that she was fierce, and strong, and full of fire, and that not even she could hold herself back because her passion burned brighter than her fears” – Mark Anthony . . One of the foremost reasons why I like following this talented girl is because we share a common love for sarees. Read how, through her story, Devyaani instilled in me the urge to re-explore the 6-yard beauty.
Were you this fashionable as a child, too?
*laughs* You can say that! I am the youngest in my family, and as far as I remember, my elder sister loved dressing me up. She would do my hair, and my mother would make me wear fashionable clothes and shoes. Finally, my father would give the approval and make the final touches. I swear I’m not making this up! Ha-ha!
Did you ever choose to study fashion keeping in mind your inclination towards it?
I am a journalist by profession! I studied literature throughout my life and honestly, I never knew I would become a fashion blogger. The blog Breviloquent happened around five years ago after everyone around me started praising my dress-sense. Funnily enough, I was not even aware of terms like ‘blogging’ when I began.

A little birdie has told me that you used to walk for the college’s fashion shows as the show-stopper. Spill the beans.
Oh my god! Yes, that’s true. I remember how some of my lovely juniors would ask for my suggestions on how to dress-up for college events. As I was saying, I started a blog called ‘From Nowhere To Somewhere’ writing about general topics and earned a huge readership from abroad. Gradually, I decided to add catchy visuals of me posing in fashionable clothes. I was surprised to see how my viewership immediately shot up after that move.
And that’s how you decided to do it professionally, right? Was finding a photographer and later, brands to collaborate with, difficult in the initial days?
This is what defines my personal style. Do not let anyone tell you how it is done. No trend is better than what you feel best in. Tap for details ✨ It’s a wrap from Design Fair at Dastkar ?

In the beginning, I used clothes from my closet. Luckily, I found a brilliant photographer, Ankit Mathur, through a contact. The turning point came when Allen Solly picked me as one of the five upcoming fashion bloggers from Delhi to be a part of their campaign. Once that happened, I became the talk of the town. *winks* Today, however, fashion houses send me samples of their goods to feature on the blog.
According to you, which body/beauty stereotypes are you slaying with your work?
I am 5 feet and think that short height is one of the biggest limitations in the fashion industry. Models are expected to be tall and thin. I am glad I could make it and work with some of the most successful brands. Since I have always been self-confident, I never let any negative thought hinder my life choices.

Your Insta bio says ‘photographer,’ do you do self-portraits?
While traveling, yes. I have no option as I am a solo traveler.
There’s nothing like @28kothi mornings! The smell of fresh coffee and the sound of the birds chirping in the background, a home away from home. You’ll have a good-good day ☕️

I am sure you pick interesting pieces while on the roll. Don’t you?
Definitely! Especially when I see anti-fit clothing, I instantly put it in my shopping bag. In accessories, I like big statement pieces which one can find while street-shopping.
Weekending with Pataka Guddi ?? For all the nakhras which are absolutely wakhra. Wishing the boss woman behind Nakhrewaali, @sakhilugani a very beer-some birthday ✨

Apparently, your love for sarees is huge. From where does the inspiration to style them come from?
I am highly inspired by the fashion in Kolkata. The big bindis and the handloom sarees, my closet is currently flooding with them. Oh, and of course, many many interesting blouses to go with them!
You have worn sarees with an off-shoulder blouse, kedia-cuts, pair of denim and even biker-chic shoes. I absolutely love the experiments you do.
You forgot to add shirts and capes! *giggles*
Do you have a favorite saree?
It has to be the Dhakai Jamdani Saree that I bought a while ago.
Since you do a lot of outdoor shoots, which things always make a way into your handbag?
Ummm…lots of napkins! Ha-ha! Other than that, there’s always a lipstick in my bag. My photographer complains that I eat it up. Well.
I see four tattoos on your body, I suspect more.
Ha-ha! Yes, there are about nine minimalist tattoos carved on my body. Most of them are usually not visible to others. Interestingly, they are inspired by literature and the influential people in my life.
You once wore a vintage pastel pink skirt. I want to know ALL about that adorable thing.
Tanned and how. Wearing an ancestral 25 year old (or maybe more) skirt from Granty for a family lunch today. Spending the weekend with the family before I pack for another work trip. Have a happy holi ?

So that is one piece in my closet which has an emotional quotient attached to it. It belongs to one of my oldest aunts who now lives in the US. Can you believe it when I say the skirt is about 60 years old? Almost every woman in our family has worn it, and now I am the lucky one who gets to keep it. No way that I am going to part it with me. *laughs* I anyway prefer monotones over prints and this skirt is definitely going to be my summer-bff.
Do you have a favorite fashion blogger?
There are three. I absolutely love Kayaan Contractor, Rhea Gupte, and Ritu Arya. More than anything, I adore their personal styles.
And lastly, why the name Breviloquent?
For me, Breviloquent is a mix of Brevity and Eloquence. This name has everything to do with my writing style. When I blog, I make sure my content has quality, more than the pictures in many cases. As a writer, my content has always been my USP. I am fortunate for I have mature readers who follow my work because of this feature.
