Do you spend a fortune as your kitchen expenses every month? This is because you buy too much than needed, cook what is not eaten, and thanks to the unnecessary demands of family or guests that make you spend a lot more. Kitchen is the most important part of a household and hence it makes it necessary to handle the budget wisely since major expenses emerge from Kitchen only.

Finance is something women are not considered an expert in. Let your Kitchen become your training ground. So women, gear up to draw a ‘Smart Budget’ via this article!
And, kitchen saving doesn’t mean to cut on your desires, but to buy smartly so that nothing gets wasted.


STEP 1: Start with evaluating past month’s expenditure.

Check those old bills from previous month (in this case March) and mark the products which weren’t useful.

STEP 2: Open your refrigerator.

Check out the vegetables you bought last time but didn’t cook because nobody loves to eat them.

STEP 3: Draw a budget.

So now you know the unnecessary items in your kitchen and you know you don’t have to buy them at first place until someone demands for it. You can also check different brands and if you are getting same quality in fewer amounts.

STEP 4: Determine what kind of real food your kids enjoy eating.

Knowing that kids are the biggest food-wasters, involve them in the process. Ask them what they like the most in vegetables and other healthy food and let them be a part of buying process. In this way, they won’t ignore but eat that.

STEP 5: Quit unhealthy food habits.

• Don’t bring bottles of Cold-drinks thinking guests may just pop up anytime. Buy maximum two 1 liter bottles and you are good to go. If extra stock is kept, your family will end up drinking it up every now and then.

• Same applies for tetra packs of juices. Buying every flavor and not drinking them the whole month because you didn’t get time, is non sense. If you are really health conscious, go for homemade squeezed juice or at the juice corner next to your home.

• Bringing many packets of Ready-to-eat and deep fry Indian snacks like aloo-tikki, paneer pakode, etc is not taking you anywhere. The more you will see these packets at home, the more you want to deep fry them and eat! Needless to say, you know they are unhealthy.

STEP 6: What to buy in bulk?

Try to buy usable and healthy products in bulk. It’s common sense to buy items in bulk because you can get cheaper than smaller packages of the same thing. Example: Onions, biscuits, namkeen, sugar, flour, cooking oil, rice, pulses, spices, etc. These items don’t rot if kept for long and are not harmed by harsh heat or humidity. For biscuits, you can use an air-tight container of course.

STEP 7: Be smart, keep an eye on Coupons.

Look out for in-store specials. You ration shop must be offering its own ‘buy 1 get 1’ scheme, apart from commercial offers. Also, look out for ration shops that sell to us in wholesale prices. Yes, they exist. Go find them in your neighborhood.

1. Freeze: those veggies that are going to be expensive in next season. Example: Peas, beans, etc.

2. Visit Muhana Mandi – Jaipur’s very own Farmer’s Market. Here you get vegetables and fruits at unbelievable low prices. Moreover, it’s the month of Mangoes, go grab kilos of its every variety. If this place is far from your home, visit vegetable market in Lal Kothi, Ambavadi sabzi mandi, Chaandpol sabzi mandi and Housing board sabzi mandi which are almost reasonable & good.

3. Make the most of leftovers – Leftovers are never to be wasted as they can always be used the next day. Use the day before vegetable dishes & put them in Parantha rolls. Consume refrigerated leftovers within a day or two of making them because then bacteria start to divide at a double rate.

4. Grow your own food. Use your garden’s small portion to grow tomatoes, cabbage, brinjal, green chilies, coriander, mint, spinach, ladyfinger, bitter guard (karela), pumpkin (kaddu), seasonal beans, etc. They are easy to grow; all you need are the seeds!

5. If you don’t have a garden, bring few earthen pots. They can easily help you grow tomatoes, coriander, chilies, brinjal, kadi patta and peas.
