This 13-year old Odishi school girl’s achievement is as exclusive as her name. Bestow your kudos on Lalita Prasida Sripada Srisai, a 9th grade student who has brought glory to India by winning the ‘Community Impact Award’ at the esteemed Google Science Fair in California on 22nd, the day before yesterday. Besides all the laud and appreciation, she has also received prize money of 10,000 USD (Approx 6 lacs).

Curious to know what this little scientist invented? When I tell you about it, you may have this thought: ‘Dude! Why didn’t this click in my mind!

She came up with a low-cost bio-absorbent based water purifier, which works through, guess what? Waste corn cobs!corn-field-snaps-026

“If the drain pipe of the household is connected to a chamber having different layers of corn cobs in partition layers or to an S-trap pipe having corn cobs, it will separate about more than 70-80 % of contaminants including suspended particles from the waste water,” says the report published about her project on the Google Science Fair website.

The aforementioned ‘contaminants’ also include oxides of salts, detergent, colored dyes, oil and grease anddd some heavy metals too.

Whoa! Who would’ve thought that rainy season’s specialty: ‘bhutta’ was as powerful as to do this!IMG_20150516_111404IMG_20150516_111235

For the inquisitive ones who are wondering how it is done… here’s the scoop:

Impure water is passed through five bottles each bearing a different layer.

Allow the industrial or domestic waste water to pass through these filters and voila! Lalita’s trick gets you get clean water!

Awesome right? And there’s more to this bright young lass. She does not only have a smart brain, she also excels in co-curricular activities such as singing and dancing. That’s twice the awesomeness!

Team JWB sends you many congratulations, girl! We are super-proud!
