Abortion… is not just a normal word of the English language! When you read it, I bet you had this drop-dead serious feeling resonating in your mind. Of course, it is not a funny or insignificant issue.
Today, we speak of a woman, who has attempted to lay bare the realities of abortion using illustrations. Wait, what? Abortion illustrations? Okay, I am a bit spooked out right now.
Oddly enough, there is some innate stigma associated with this word. And so with the women who sign up for it. Abortion, be it voluntary or forced, medical or surgical, right or wrong, is never easy for the woman experiencing it. Even if you intentionally want it, there are some psychological repercussions such as confusion, fear, and loneliness, tied to it.
Leah Hayes, writer and artist, has created Not Funny Ha-Ha: A Handbook for Something Hard, a book of illustrations which takes the readers through the thought processes which occur in the mind of two women who opt for abortions, one medical and the other surgical.
“The aim of this book was to offer a calming ‘voice’ (a visual one) for women as they move through a difficult passage. Writing this book was not intended to lighten the subject, define the ‘right or wrong’ of the subject, or make it trivial in any way. I hope to offer a work that could make someone who had an experience with abortion feel less alone,” says Leah.
Scroll through the witty and what appears to be comforting illustrations of Leah’s Not Funny handbook.
An important thing that Leah conveys to all the women out there is that the final decision about abortion rests in your hand.
To have, or not to have! (Sounds a bit Shakespearean, I know, but okay!)
We second your thoughts, Leah! And to the women who suffer from the stigma related to abortion, we hope you find some solace through this handbook!
