After nationwide protests, candle marches yelling slogans for justice for the victims and their families in the Kathua and Unnao rape cases, people have come together to launch an online crowdfunding campaign to help them financially too.
Originally meant to collect Rs 10 lakh to support the victim’s family, the fundraiser is now for the Unnao victim’s family as well and the total amount collected will be equally divided between both the victims’ families and it will be used to support the lawyers fighting their cases.
This fundraiser, launched in association with CrowdNewsing, a campaign organization, has raised over Rs 35,21,160 with 1454 supporters. The prominent donors are Omar Abdullah who donated Rs 25000 and comedian Vir Das who donated over Rs 60,000.
Her family believes that the only way to get justice is to move the case out of Jammu for which they would be needing legal support and resources in order to fight this case from another city.
“This is where we, the people of this country come in. If we could raise enough funds for the family and create a legal fund for them, there is a good chance that the family will have the resources they need to continue their quest for justice,” requested the petitioners on the crowdfunding platform.
“Every time our government fails our people, it becomes the duty of the citizens to come together and support those in need. Ordinary citizens have once again proved that they are in-charge of this society,” said Bilal Zaidi, founder and community coordinator at CrowdNewsing.
