Do you remember Maryam Siddiqui? This 12 yr old from Mumbai had won a competition testing knowledge of the Bhagwad Gita, conducted by ISKCON. About 4,000 students from Maharashtra participated in the contest. After her back was patted to appreciate the achievement, she’s got us another reason to salute her.
Maryam has donated her prize cash rewards for the education of poor girls. She had received many felicitations, awards and honours from the President Pranab Mukherjee, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, several chief ministers and organisations.
Maryam’s father says: “Though we are not financially well off, my daughter has made it her mission to work for the education of girls.”
Maryam, a Class 6 student, is a wonder. When Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav honoured her with a cheque of Rs.11 lakh, she not only returned it but also offered him two cheques of Rs.11,000 each for girl education.
She would be sending more such cheques to the CMs of few states. Kudos, girl!
