Egypt’s first and youngest female shipmaster, Marwa el-Slehdar, is 24 yr old.
She is a graduate of the 73rd class of the Arab Academy of Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AAST) in the coastal city Alexandria. She is also regarded as the first Egyptian woman to study marine navigation at AAST.
She thanks her family who has supported her fulfill this dream in a male-dominated field.
Marwa shares her first experience on the ship, “When I was informed of being accepted as part of the Aida 4 crew, I was both happy and afraid. But when I stepped on the ship, Captain Abdelhamid el-Qady, master of Aida 4, was very welcoming which washed away my fear. I soon blended in with the crew, and felt like they were my family.”
Lesson to take back home – It is not just the family but also the people at a woman’s workplace who need to show their support & help her grow. We are happy for you, Marwa el-Slehdar.
