After Maysoon’s first-ever television appearance on Countdown with Keith Olberman in 2010, she encountered online bullying and hate over her religion, her physical affliction and her looks.
Maysoon Zayid) is an American actress, comedian and advocate. She once described herself as “a Palestinian Muslim virgin with cerebral palsy, from New Jersey, who is an actress, comedian and activist”. She is considered one of America’s first Muslim women comedians and the first person ever to perform standup in Palestine and Jordan.
She says –
“People would tell me, ‘Why do you respond to these anonymous trolls? They have no effect on you, you’re bigger than that. And the reason I respond is because someone has to. Because if no one ever tells them, ‘Stop. Think about what you’re saying. Are you proud of this?’ then they will go after someone not as strong as me. And when they go after someone not as strong as me, that person might take their own life. And if there is anything I can do to make people stop with the hate and find something better to focus on, that’s my goal.”
She is definitely killing hatred with her compassion. She says –
“Having compassion is not easy. And it challenges me every day. It’s so much easier to lash out and hate the people who are being hateful to you than try to actually connect with them and engage and see why they’re doing it and see if there’s anything you can do to make them stop.”
Bravo, girl for not letting Cerebral Palsy or societal taboos stop you.
