Every person in this world has a burning passion to do something or the other in the world. Yes, even the homeless, and also the rag pickers! This is the story of one such rag picker who completely transformed her life!
Manjula Vaghela, a rag picker in Ahmedabad, used to earn as little as Rs. 5 per day. It is thirty five years into the future and she now has a turnover of a whopping Rs. 1 Crore per annum. Surprised? She began a cooperative by the name Shri Saundarya Safai Utkarsh Mahila Sewa Sahkari Mandali Ltd. (SSSUMSSM). It began with about fifty women offering commercial cleaning services, with an initial support from Self-Employed Women’s Association (Sewa).
It took her about five years to get her cooperative registered by the authorities. Their first opportunity came from National Institute of Design.
Today, they employ more than 400 members, majority of whom have been former rag pickers!
Wow! Gotta say, Manjula didn’t pick her usual life because she had the courage to do something bigger than that.
Perfect dose of inspiration, ain’t it, couch potatoes?
