Afshan Ashiq is the fiery girl from Jammu and Kashmir who was in headlines last year for attacking policemen with stones during a protest.
The young woman had pelted stones at policemen in retaliation for their behavior. She said that the anger was triggered after a policeman had slapped one of her friends while they were walking home. The act got her into the spotlight, only to discover her footballing skills later. She had already been into the sports and quite dedicated way before the picture went viral.
“They were two girls Afhsan and Nadiya. When the entire situation was tense and people would try to stay away from roads, these two girls were fighting routine stereotyping and coming for football practice to the stadium where we noticed them,” an official of the J&K Sports Council said.
She is now the goalkeeper and captain of J&K’s football team of 22 members and also plays for a Mumbai Football Club. Taking her leadership a level up, she sought Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s help for the betterment of team’s training facilities and infrastructure.
Rajnath Singh has spoken to J&K’s Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who was already in support of the girl’s team, to meet the team again on her return to hear out the problems. The 23-year-old player has also stated that the Indian home minister has informed them about an amount of Rs. 100 crore already being sanctioned for the state.
Met the young and energetic girls of J&K’s first ever women football team. They are highly motivated & driven when it comes to football. Playing the role of new age ‘Gender Benders’ these girls are setting an example for others to follow. I wish them success and a great future.
On her meeting with the Home Minister, she said, “I was impressed by how patiently a Union minister heard the issues raised by us. We sought better sports infrastructure in J&K. The home minister called up J&K CM in front of us and told her to meet us when we get back to Srinagar.”
The young girl has apparently also inspired few Bollywood producers to make a movie on her.
