And the girl was just in class 12. Very sad.
17 yr old Khushbu Kumari from Dumka district of Jharkhand killed herlsef after her parents refused to construct a toilet in the home as they wanted to save money for the 17-year-old’s marriage.
Though we want to see the awareness of hygiene spreading across rural areas, but certainly not at this cost. Jharkhand, however, is a state with highest rate of open defecation. The 2011, census showed that 92.4% people in Jharkhand’s rural areas do not have toilets.
Police told that Khushbu was fed up and ashamed of defecating in open fields. Plus, the fear of sexual assault during night was always higher.
Khushbu’s mother said – “For us marriage was more important. She was demanding a toilet and on Friday we had a heated argument. She was stubborn and ended her life.”
Under one scheme, government provides Rs 4,600 to every household for toilet construction. This family clearly seems uninformed.
