India’s First Lady Suvra Mukherjee Passes Away

Wife of Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee, Suvra Mukherjee passed away on Tuesday morning at 10.51 am.
She had been ill for some time and was suffering from respiratory problems recently.
She is survived with her husband, and three children – Abhijit Mukherjee, Indrajit Mukherjee and Sharmistha Mukherjee.
Surva was born on September 17, 1940 in Jessore (now in Bangladesh). She was famous for having a multi-talented personality – a renowned vocalist, painter, and author. She was a vocalist of Rabindra Sangeet and had been performing in the poet’s dance-dramas for years.
She was also a fan of Rabindranath Tagore, and that why she founded the Geetanjali Troupe which propagates Tagore’s philosophy through his songs and dance-dramas.
As a painter, she was regular in international art exhibitions. Surva has ‘Chokher Aloey’ – a personal account of her close interaction with Smt. Indira Gandhi, and ‘Chena Achenai Chin‘ – a travelogue recounting her visit to China.
