It turns out, the story of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ exists in real life, but in reverse! In the movie, an adorable Pakistani girl gets stranded in India, and our protagonist helps her get home.
Our Indian ‘Munni’ goes by the name of ‘Geeta’, and is hearing and speech challenged. Her parents claim that she got lost in a fair held in 2004 near the Indo-Pak border. She was 10 years old when she accidentally crossed the border, but it is not clear exactly how she crossed the border. Geeta mimes an explosion and shows how she ducked and ran before being caught by armed men.
After 13 years, she was unable to recognize the people who claim to be her parents, and her brothers, from Bihar.
Many details that her father gave about his lost daughter don’t add up; Geeta has denied that she was married and has a child.
“Geeta met the Mahato couple today, but she could not recognize them. We have taken blood samples. We will get DNA tests of whoever claims that she is their daughter,” Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said in Delhi, seated next to a beaming Geeta, dressed in a red and white salwar kameez.
“We will wait for the DNA test results. Because she has refused to go with the Mahatos and said they are not her parents, she will stay at a home in Indore,” said Ms Swaraj, who had earlier tweeted, “Welcome home our daughter”.
She had boarded a Pakistan International Airlines flight along with her foster family in Pakistan, the Edhis, to Delhi. Geeta is very excited to be home, and she said “I am very happy. In Pakistan I used to feel miserable.”
Geeta’s story gained media attention after the release of the blockbuster movie ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. The Indian Government vowed to get her back after that.
She has resolved to stay in India and work.
#GeetaComesHome top trended on Twitter as she landed in Delhi. She finally got her happy ending!
