Indian Mermaid & Queen of Oceans – names like these are all over the internet describing the Indian Swimmer Bula Choudhury. Born in 1970, Bula started swimming at a tender age of 6. During this time, she had already won six gold medals in six events. Whoa! No doubt, she grew up to be a national swimming champion.
Talking about the awards, Bula has grabbed the Arjuna Award in 1990 along with the Padma Shri award. She has won various junior and national championships, 6 gold medals at the 1991 South Asian Federation Games, won the 81-km (50- mile) Murshidabad Long Distance Swim in 1996.
Isn’t she a go-getter?
When asked about the mantra behind her success, she says it is her husband, Sanjib Chakraborty, who should get the credit. Sanjib is not only a good husband encouraging his wife, but also her coach who trains her for every event. He is the former captain of the Indian Olympic Swimming Team.
Today Bula is 45 but hasn’t lost the enthusiasm and her love for swimming. She is now preparing to set up her own Swimming Academy in Kolkata. All the best, Bula!
