Holocaust survivor, Edith Steiner, was rescued by a handsome soldier, John Mackay, some 70 years ago (in the early 1940s). Soon after this, they fell in love and got married on July 17th, 1946.
This year, the lovely couple is celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary.
The Holocaust, also referred to as the Shoah, was a genocide in which some six million European Jews were killed by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany, and the World War II collaborators with the Nazis.
It was during this time that John’s elite unit liberated many Jewish female prisoners and as fate had it, Edith was one of them. He was in the ranks of a commando team that was able to liberate a substantial number of Jewish prisoners from their Nazi guards.
Edith, now 92, was 20 years old back then and was sent to the concentration camp along with her mother. They were the only members of their family to survive.
Edith met John once again while celebrating her liberation at a village. Being filmy, John sent a friend over to ask Edith if she wanted to dance with him but she refused. He didn’t give up and this time, he himself went up to her. Later, the couple danced all night long.
