Filmmaker Tanuja Chandra Says Her Film ‘Sur–The Melody of Life’ Could Have Done Differently Today

Filmmaker Tanuja Chandra started her career in 1995 with a TV series. However, she was in the limelight when she wrote the screenplay for Yash Chopra’s hit Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and later, wrote the brilliant films Dushman (1998) and Sangharsh (1999).
And while she was all heart for writing such tough stories, she came up with scripts like ‘Sur – The Melody of Life,’ a rather delicate story about love and life in general. Sadly, Sur didn’t do well on the box-office nor did her other film, ‘Little Sugar.’
But Tanuja isn’t sad about it, in fact, she feels that had the film Sur released now, it would have done better.
She told HT, “Story and treatment-wise, Sur was nothing like what was being made at that time. Had it released in today’s time, when content-driven films are given more importance, I feel it would have got better reception as it had the potential. There is more openness towards films with fresh and interesting content in the market. Hope and a Little Sugar (2006) is another film I think would also have done better.”
If you’ve watched Sur, tell us what you like the most about this film!
Sometime back, IWB spoke to Tanuja about her book ‘Bijnis Woman.’ About which she said, “The book is a collection of quirky stories. Some of them are dramatic. They are stories of unusual people whose stories have stayed with me. These stories are not necessarily of people that I have met, some of them were told to me by ‘mausis,’ ‘mamas’ and other relatives.”
