E-Rickshaws Driven By Women To Hit The Roads Soon!

Women are soon going to invade one more male-dominated field and we are super chirpy about that!

Women travelling in public transport is a common sight, but women driving public transport… now that’s something unusual and new to the eyes. But very soon, New Delhi will be able to witness this scenario.

In a project initiated by Women and Child Development Ministry, 100 women will be trained to be later inducted as e-rickshaw drivers, with the ultimate motive of creating women-friendly and safe public transportation.

The idea is to make women more independent and empowered. If a public transport is driven by a woman, other women also get confidence to join in,says the senior official from the Ministry.

The aforementioned Ministry is going to launch the project soon in collaboration with Rashtriya Mahila Kosh (RMK) which is among the several programmes of an NGO that specialises in training women drivers.

This particular programme (RMK) strives to provide financial assistance to the aspiring women in this avenue by the means of direct funding as well as self-help groups.

“They can be provided loan to buy the e-rickshaw under Rashtriya Mahila Kosh scheme. And if it takes off successfully, we can encourage other state governments also to adopt the model. There were some requirements under the Motor Vehicle Act which women were not able to meet like height etc. Also there were issues of timings as women can only be allowed to work from 7 AM to 8 PM, which is fair enough. So, these things will have to be worked out,” adds the official.

Well, we really hope this project works out not just in New Delhi, but in all the cities of the country. Not only will the concept ensure women-friendly public transportation, but will also add to the earning means and financial independence of a woman.

Transportation… of the women, by the women, but for both women and men. Who’s up for this?
