The festival is to enjoy but somewhere, our favorite festival Diwali is not only harming the environment but also the health of our loved ones. Let us discuss ways in which we can lower the damage – at that, not compromising on the festive spirit.

  • Crackers – Instead of the traditional crackers, opt for eco-friendly products that are made from recycled papers and the noise produced is within the decibel limits set by the Central Pollution Control Board.
  • Diyas, not Candles – Apart from looking stunning, earthen diyas are bio-degradable and cost effective. Instead of opting for candles, LEDs or electrical lamps, give your home, garden & balcony a more traditional look.
  • Recyclable Décor – Handmade lanterns & lamps and wall decors are in these days. Your nearby art & craft festivals have them in display. Check out the Diwali fare near Vidhaan Sabha, Lal Kothi and the craft fare in Jawahar Kala Kendra. They have some really creative stuff in affordable prices.
  • Eco Rangoli – Use organic colors. They are a little expensive than the inorganic ones, but who wouldn’t like paying for a much better quality? The organic colors are safe for the small kids too. You can also use flower petals which are available in every color.
  • Eco Gifts – Ask your gift-shopkeeper to use handmade paper for the gifts you have bought for friends and family. Also, ditch the regular gifts this year and give away flower plants, saplings, colorful jute apparel or jute accessories like bags, table mats, etc.
  • Virtual wishes – Idea of saving paper becomes better with e-Diwali cards. Besides you can enjoy the e-crackers. Just put in a nice sound system around the home and enjoy!

These small steps can make the regular Diwali an Eco-Diwali. Think of the infants, people with hearing problems, respiratory issues like asthma; and pets & stray animals. All of them are hurt by the loud, squeaky noise of crackers and pollution.
