On the eve of International Women’s Day, Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal had announced that Bengaluru is getting its first railway station run entirely by women and Banaswadi railway station is the one to get the honour. It is the fifth all-women-run railway station in the country where all activities will be carried out by women.
From the station master, reservation clerk to the booking clerk, all the positions will be held by women. Indian Railways has a workforce of 13 lakh but women for only 7.6 percent of it, i.e., one lakh women.
“Indian Railways does not distinguish while recruiting people, but there are a few sectors in the railways for which Indian women, unfortunately, do not apply. We would start recruiting more women soon, particularly in the Railway Protection Force,” said Goyal.
On the occasion of Women’s day, many trains across Indian Railways were operated by women staff, like Koyna Express, Mumbai Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express, Deccan Express, Ranchi Bici Tori Express, Dadadham Express, Gorakhpur Nautanva Express, Baramati Express, Sangamitra Express, Bhopal -Bilaspur Express and Howrah Digha Express.
Making the day even more special, Manju Devi, who is the coolie badge no. 15 at Jaipur station and is the first female coolie on Indian Railways, was honoured at the ‘First Ladies’ event by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Other all-women-run railway stations are in Matunga (Mumbai), Gandhinagar (Jaipur), Chandragiri in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district and Ajni in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
