The chances of Padmavati releasing in Rajasthan appear to be rather bleak as the tide of opposition against the period drama film doesn’t seem to be ceasing. A group of Rajput women expressed their anger in a press conference and warned that they would take to the streets to oppose the film if it happens to distort any fact.

On Friday, the women of the Rajput community in Rajasthan had joined the heated debates on banning the film’s release in the state. Blaming Sanjay Leela Bhansali of maligning the image of the queen of Chittor, Queen Padmini, by presenting distorted facts, they said that it was an insult to every Hindu woman out there.

“Queen Padmini had performed Jauhar along with 16,000 women. If needed, 32,000 Rajput women will come out on the streets to oppose the film’s release if it depicts the queen in a bad light,” said Manisha Singh, the convenor of the Kshatrani Sankalp. Rumours of the film showcasing a romantic relationship between Allauddin Khilji and Rani Padmavati has further infuriated the community.

“If a film was made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi that distorted facts, would its release be allowed?” she asked. They want the film to be specifically screened for their community and the subsequent removal of any scene that they find objectionable.

“The queen is shown performing the ghoomar dance in indecent clothes, which is a faulty portrayal of Rajputs. A Rajput queen would never perform before an audience nor bare her midriff,” said another member Poonam Khangarot.

With the release of the second song of the film, Ek Dil Ek Jaan, the film is approaching its D-day.
