Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat claimed top position in the Spain Grand Prix in Madrid on Sunday after she won a gold in the women’s freestyle 50kg category, giving up only one point during her five bouts.

She started the round by beating Mariana Diaz on technical superiority and then Erin Golston with 12-1. In the semifinals too, she beat Jessi Macdonald with a score of 10-0 on technical superiority.

She beat Natasha Fox of Canada 10-0 in the final bout of the 50kg category to claim her second consecutive gold after her gold at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

For the upcoming Asian Games, beginning 18 August in Jakarta and Palembang, she has already set a high standard with her classic feat.

“My confidence got boosted after winning gold at CWG. In this competition, I wanted to see where I lack, heading into the Asian Games. It was a big competition, it was world class. The target was to play and do well here before the Asian Games,” Vinesh said. “It was a good field with top wrestlers from Russia, USA, and Canada in my category. I hope I can continue with my gold spree at the Asian Games.”

Currently, Vinesh is training in Hungary with her new coach Woller Akos and said, “I have trained for about 20 days with him in Hungary and he has nicely picked where I need to do better. He is happy with my performance so far and preparing me for gold at Asian Games.”
